GIMP brushes by shalpin GIMP brushes by shalpin
Some of the brushes I use. They are all made by me - feel free to use them anywhere, anyway you choose, with credit or without. If you do use them, I'd love to see the result. Drop me a note or comment.

To use them, use the download link on the left, unzip them to your brushes directory and click refresh on the brushes menu.

Try different colors, sizes, opacities, jitter, and brush spacing for more versatile effects.

If anyone wants help installing, wants to know how these were created, how to create image pipes in GIMP, or how the image above was obtained with these brushes, let me know.

First find your brushes directory - in GIMP, go to the menu Edit, select Preferences.

In the dialog that comes up, look for folders at the bottom of the left pane and click on the little triangle to the left of it to expand it. Select brushes and the right pane will show your brushes directory.

Download the zip with the brushes and unzip them to that directory.

If gimp was running, restart it and you should see some new brushes.

If you have problems, let me know which bits worked and where the problem started.

It was painted with different levels of gray and then ColorS|Map|Gradient Map was run, using the gradient named Incandescent.

Oh man these look great, but I'm stuck -__- How do you unzip them to your brushes directory?
Reply
:iconshalpin:
shalpin Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2010
I'm guessing that you're not sure where your brushes directory is.

Probably the easiest way to do it is:
* find out where gimp is installed - the default is c:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0
* look under that directory for share\gimp\2.0\brushes
* either unzip the file there, or unzip them in a directory of your choice and copy them there

If you are having difficulty finding the ".zip" file, you have to use the "download" link on the left of the page.

Thanks, but my brushes aren't that great, but they are really easy to make yourself. Google image pipes, or for a good starter set, try googling gimp paint studio. Make sure you get the manual too for gps and give it a quick read to get the most out of it.

hey! I downloaded these and unzipped them into the brushes file, but they aren't even showing up when i look at my brushes in gimp. I tried refreshing them, too...
have i made a mistake?
^__^ I'd love it if you could help me!

I'll try.

If you use windows explorer, can you see the file "water drops.gih" in your brushes directory (note that it must be in the directory itself, not a directory under that one)?

If no, then something went wrong with the unzip or moving of the files.

If yes, then check in the gimp preferences, folders/brushes and check that the directory you are looking in is on the list.

Does that help?

well I'm not too sure what you're getting at... you see... I'm a bit of a noob ^__^'
does the file type have to be 'gih'?
I have a couple of them, but also the file 'gbr'
... not sure if that makes any difference, but neither of them show up in gimp anyways.
I downloaded the zipped file directly into the 'brushes' file, then unzipped it, and all of the brushes I want, not the zipped files they came in, are in the 'brushes' folder.
sorry if you're confused at this point, haha, but i really need some help!
and I'm going to honestly say that I have no idea what you're on about with the 'check that the directory you are looking in is on the list'

I'm so sorry for this trouble!!
^__^ you're pretty much my only hope, lol~

No problem - it's just trying to find a common ground so that we both know what the other is talking about :) It might take a few goes :)

The brushes in my set have the "gih" file type, but other GIMP brushes have gbr (they are just two different types of GIMP brush).

It sounds as though the brush files got extracted ok from the zip into the folder that you want. The next step would be to check that GIMP is actually looking for them there.

Open up GIMP and select the menu item File, then Preferences. A window titled "Preferences" should open up. In this window on the left-hand side are a series of icons and names. Expand the one that says "Folders" (click on the + sign next to it) and you should see some more icons and text. Select the one that says "Brushes" and the right side of the window will show the Brush Folders. Is the folder that we have the brushes in listed here? If not, put it in (click the "new" icon - it looks like a blank sheet of paper) and restart GIMP.

If this doesn't help, let me know:
* the full path of the folder where the brushes are (I know it's "brushes", but I want the full path, something like "C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\brushes"
* the folders that appear in the GIMP Brush Folders list in the preferences (see above for details of how to get there)

I've tried to put everything in detail - maybe some of which you may think is obvious - I'm not trying to patronize you, just making sure we are on the same page. On the other hand, if it is the opposite and I'm still not clear, let me know which bits and how it's not clear :)

thanks for all of your help!
It's really nice to know that someone would take the time to explain!
I'm glad thre are people like you ^__^
I realize what I did wrong, you see, I was opening the file called 'gimp 2.0' (which I had transferred into 'my documents' for easier access) and then going into 'brushes', without being in the shared drive(C:) I now know that I had to click on ';programme files', and then 'share', and then 'gimp', then '2.0'
AND THEN 'brushes' and save th file and unzip it there instead!
Thanks a bunch! I shall now watch you ^__^
I hope we can stay in touch!
I'm sure you're a find, lol.
I shall make sure to vent my noobness to you in futre!
